A Former British territory located in the British West Indies

Sprawled on the Caribbean coast, nestled between Mexico and Guatemala, Belize offers an intriguing mix of tropical forests rich with wildlife, majestic mountains, mysterious Mayan temples, and diving and fishing experiences beyond compare. In a single day, you can go from tropical forest to the longest barrier reef in the Western Hemisphere. The natural ecology and individual history varies from town to town, adding to the intrigue of Belize. So pack your bags, but keep it light... while Belize offers more than enough to keep you on the move (even if it's just to roll over on the beach), you will never have to move far thanks to its diverse and convenient geography.

  • Hike or canoe under the shade of the rainforest canopy in the company of over 500 species of birds.
  • Observe stalactites and stalagmites in caves that contain pottery and ceremonial remnants of the ancient Maya.
  • Island hop by kayak between the cays or around one of Belize's three atolls.
  • Witness a sunset from atop a Mayan temple
  • Snorkel with the kids and learn about the biology of the barrier reef.
  • Take a refreshing dip beneath one of the many spectacular waterfalls.
  • Exchange vows with the crystal Caribbean Sea lapping at your feet.
  • Swap stories back at your luxury resort after a day of wrestling with permit, tarpon and bonefish.

  • Cat House: Belize
Heed the call of the wild at this big cat habitat in Belize.
    Belize Untamed
High tea and tarantulas. Private island hideouts and sharks as long as limos. Treehouse suites and waterfalls in pitch-black caves. Belize may offer a little more luxury these days, but the adventure it serves up is as real and as raw as ever.
    Jaguars, Toucans and Talking Kangaroos
On safari in Belize with a visionary eco-tour outfit -- This story begins in 1972, when a Long Island-based outdoors writer named Nick Karas takes his 12-year-old son Ken out of school to go on a safari the entire length of Africa, from Cairo to the Cape. A precocious lad, Ken brings along a 16 mm camera to film the adventure -- and a career is born.
    Belize Expanded Coverage
We had so many great photographs after a recent trip to Belize, we couldn't keep them to ourselves. Photographer Zach Stovall lets us see Belize from his point of view.
    Placencia Springs Back
In the fall of 2001, Hurricane Iris slammed into Belize. The 13-foot-high storm surge that swept over the southern village of Placencia uprooted trees, leveled houses and hotels, wrecked boats and severely damaged the funky beach town's claim to fame - a meandering ribbon of sidewalk that serves as its main street.
    Sweet & Sassy
Three years ago, Carol Milnes and Hannah Cowell left England for Belize after reading about it in a magazine. They made their way to the funky little beach town of Placencia, where they opened a bar.
See World - Belize It or Not

    SEA IT TO BELIZE IT!

Ever dreamt of a wedding in a lush tropical rainforest? How about among magnificent Mayan ruins, on a beach by the blue-green Caribbean, or with jungle rivers and waterfalls as a backdrop? A vacation in Belize with your loved one will truly be unforgettable if you decide to say your “I do’s” there. If you’re ready for a unique and romantic Belizean wedding, read on.
Believe it or not, it’s not at all hard to get married in Belize. First off, a couple must have been staying in the country for at least 3 days before they can obtain a marriage license. Forms can be had from the General Registry in Belize City and the Attorney General Office in Belmopan. These must be completed and signed in the presence of a Justice of the Peace. You will need proof of citizenship (your passport will suffice) and proof of marital status if divorced or widowed. The usual approval time usually takes a week. Two witnesses, who may be your friends or locals, are also required. The ceremony may be performed by a senior Justice of the Peace, a church minister, or a boat captain.
The legal fees will cost you about less than US$200—the application fee is $100, the legal ceremony $5, and a donation for the religious officer. Donations to churches and schools are also accepted. If you would like to make the arrangements yourself, you should contact the General Registry before you leave your home country. Luckily, most hotels provide assistance with the arrangements, from securing the forms to getting your fantasy honeymoon package.
If you wish to be married at an archeological reserve such as the Mayan ruins, send a letter of permission at least a week before to the Commissioner of Archeology. Remember to bring your own wedding attire from home as there are few bridal shops in Belize. In lieu of a gown and tux, however, you may opt to dress in casual, colorful beachwear or semi-formal evening wear. It’s all up to you. Wherever you choose to get married in Belize, it’s sure to be the ultimate exotic wedding.
